Phoenix is involved with the ongoing evolution and development of this technique, including measurement and heating methods, as it moves towards becoming a full European test standard.

In addition to this, we have worked with UK universities to develop small punch test fixtures and instrumentation, which can be retrofitted into a standard hydraulic test frame of any make.

Small Punch testing is carried out on a sample approximately 0.5mm thick x 8.5mm* in diameter. This allows a complete test programme to be carried out on less material than a single traditional creep specimen.

(*sample sizes may vary)

The Phoenix Small Punch Creep Machine is a compact design, 1kN capacity machine with precision load features, and constant load applied using masses.

Loading bars and specimen adaptors are manufactured for testing up to 1100°C.

The initial load is applied using a motorised mechanism to prevent shock loading of the sample.

The small punch system is fitted with two LVDTs to measure the sample deformation and indenter travel, this also shows changes in the sample thickness as it deforms.

Data acquisition systems can be supplied either as individual systems for each machine, or as a central data acquisition system for multiple creep machines.
