High Temperature and Environmental Testing Presentation
Vicki Wilkes, Phoenix Materials Testing Ltd
31st October 2018, 12:45 - 1:00pm
Automotive Engineering Forum

The subject of High Temperature and Environmental Testing is one of great interest across a wide range of sectors and applications, including Aerospace, Nuclear, Automotive, Oil and Gas, as people strive to predict the lifespan of products in service, as well as understanding the influence of individual factors for use in design models.
It is important that people understand the complexity and considerations involved in specifying and carrying out high temperature and environmental testing. Inaccurate data is not only meaningless, it can lead to people making the wrong decisions with potentially serious consequences.
I will present on my experiences, knowledge and solutions developed through designing and validating test equipment, alongside carrying out subcontract testing services, at elevated temperatures and a range of challenging atmospheres.

Phoenix to Host EIS Seminar: The Challenges of Structural Integrity at High Temperature, 4th October 2018

Phoenix Materials Testing Ltd will be hosting the next EIS seminar, focusing on "The Challenges of Structural Integrity at High Temperature" on 4th October 2018

This seminar is aimed at engineers with hands on involvement in the world of high temperature applications, either for the design, or validation and testing, of materials, components and models. The seminar will stimulate discussion and the sharing of information, techniques and challenges across a range of sectors.

Topics of Discussion

  • Challenges involved in implementing and maintaining high temperature control accuracy during complex mechanical testing
  • Controlled Higher Resolution Non-Uniform Heating and Applications
  • Stress cracking and fatigue testing of nickel based superalloys in a hot corrosion environment
  • High strength steels at elevated temperature
  • Determining Damage Evolution using Advanced Monitoring Techniques at High Temperatures (>800C)
  • Creep Fatigue Interaction for Nuclear Fusion
  • In-situ synchrotron measurements of stress relaxation in Titanium alloys
  • In-situ creep fatigue testing at the diffraction facilities

Phoenix Pledges Support to Local Charity

Employees at Phoenix Materials Testing Ltd have pledged their support to local charity, White House Cancer Support. Phoenix will be holding regular fundraising events to provide vital funds, which will help families affected by cancer within the Dudley Borough.

To celebrate the start of the partnership, Phoenix staff visited the White House on 5th September 2018 for a tour of the premises, and to see how their fundraising activities will support the charity’s work.

Sam Shevyn, Operations Manager at Phoenix, says: "Our staff have been keen to work with a local charity to ensure that we give something back to our community. The wonderful work of White House Cancer Support touched a chord with many of our own team and we are delighted to be able to provide vital funds and work in partnership with them.”

White House Cancer Support is a local charity based in the centre of Dudley, West Midlands offering an extensive range of support and resources, including a bespoke transport service to attend cancer treatments, holistic therapies, counselling services including bereavement support, financial advice and guidance, and a variety of wellbeing services to those affected by a cancer diagnosis within the Dudley borough and surrounding areas.

External Acknowledgement of Phoenix's High Quality Standards and Technical Capability

We are delighted to announce that we have been granted Rolls Royce Technical Approval for High Temperature and Environmental Testing. This is an exciting time for Phoenix as we continue to develop our high temperature and environmental products and services for customers across a wide range of industries including Aerospace, Nuclear and Automotive.

"This is a great opportunity for Phoenix to demonstrate our quality and ability to supply world leading companies with unrivalled products and services," says Sam Shevyn, Operations Manager.

In addition to this, following a successful audit in May 2018, we are now certified to ISO 9001: 2015, ISO 14001: 2015 and BH OHSAS 18001 2007. This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing the highest-quality products and services to new and existing customers, even for one-off and unique requirements. The new approval sit alongside our existing UKAS certification for testing (flexible scope, lab 0790) and calibration services (lab 6202).

Phoenix takes part in local STEM project

Our Operations Manager, Sam Shevyn, and Mechanical Design Manager, Tom Batham, have been taking part in a six month STEM project, focusing on designing and creating a product to help homelessness within the UK.

The team of six Castle High School pupils developed a one-person tent with a filter installed to collect rain water and turn this into drinking water. The project encourages young pupils from schools within the Dudley Borough to get involved with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths events. Development in this area is key for Phoenix, as we focus on innovative and technological advancements within our local area.

The concluding event took place in the Hangar building of Dudley College, one of the campus’s latest buildings, where judges evaluated product designs from a total of 20 local participating schools.

FTF Testing Technology Update

UKAEA has released more details of its Fusion Technologies Facilities (FTF). We are extremely proud to see Phoenix’s environmental chambers being used in the development of fusion technology and the wider nuclear sector. Find out more here
