TMF Testing

Our Phoenix test laboratory can carry out sub-contract Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) testing to elevated temperatures up to 1000°C, replicating the extreme temperatures your sample may face in real-world applications.

Overview

Similar to fatigue testing, Thermo-Mechanical fatigue (TMF) testing aims to understand the behaviour of a particular material, with the addition of temperature measurement. Using induction heating, infrared emitters, or traditional furnaces, we can measure up to 1000°C, to determine the maximum temperature a component can withstand until failure occurs.

Each project will have a test preparation and contract review procedure, and we discuss heating options with our customer to determine the best solution to achieve the required temperatures for the test. If required, we can  manufacture bespoke grips and fixtures to ensure the sample fits into the machine, ready for testing.

We carry out TMF testing using a dedicated 160kN hydraulic test machine, complete with induction heating, forced air cooling, an emissivity compensating pyrometer, thermal imaging high temperature extensometry, and environmental control. The heating and cooling profiles can be phased in sync or out of sync with other modes of control (load, strain) as required.

We have performed TMF testing applications for our European Automotive customers, and Research & Development organisations based in the USA.

Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) Software

We offer sub-contract TMF testing using the Phoenix Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue software, which is written to the latest international TMF standard, plus additional features to allow tailored TMF research. Our TMF Software is written in-house, by our specialist team of software engineers, and is controlled by one of our Phoenix Alpha Digital Control Systems.

TMF Test Machines

We also design and manufacture our own bespoke Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) Test Machines for customers that wish to carry out their own TMF testing applications. Phoenix can supply a complete system with frame and hydraulic power pack, or we can fit TMF controls to your existing equipment.
