Phoenix Collaborates with Welding Inspection Industry to Provide Hot Tensile Tests on High-Strength Alloys

Phoenix is delighted to have recently collaborated with a customer in the welding inspection industry to carry out elevated tensile testing on alloy samples using a bespoke induction coil designed in-house by our engineers. We were tasked with performing a series of elevated temperature tests on a batch of samples of Inconel 718 alloy to determine the maximum load and temperature the sample could withstand before fracturing.

Bespoke Testing Requirements

The samples needed to be tested at both room temperature and at elevated temperatures to a maximum of 800°C, soaking at temperatures for up to 10 minutes per test.

Our main aim was to achieve the maximum temperature of 727°C (1000 Kelvin) in 60 seconds. Using our induction system, we were able to achieve the temperature ramp and carry out 12 elevated tensile tests using an Epsilon Contact Extensometer and a hired DIC.

Using our inhouse 125kN hydraulic test machine (London), non-contact and contract extensometers, and a specially designed bespoke induction coil, we performed hot tensile tests on all samples.

A bespoke coil was designed in order to undertake testing with both a contact extensometer and non-contact extensometer. The coil design allowed for full temperature uniformity within the sample, as well as an provide a clear line of sight for the set-up of a DIC for non-contact strain measurement.

Being able to provide both set-ups allowed the customer to be able to compare results and choose the right set-up for the next stage of their project later in the year.

Case Study Highlights

  • Bespoke testing on complex, super-alloy material
  • Hot tensile testing up to temperatures of 727°C in 60 seconds
  • Specially designed induction coil to suit the sample geometry for high temperature testing
  • Equipment used included our 125kN test machine, contact and non-contact exensometry
  • Comparable data and test reports to support future project developments

Inconel 718 Alloy: Durable Materials for Welding

Inconel 718 is a high-strength, durable alloy with remarkable characteristics. Its endurance against corrosion, ability to withstand high temperatures, and resistance to post-weld cracking means that the material is ideal for use in welding applications. It can also be used for manufacturing complex products and samples, including cryogenic storage tanks, liquid-fuelled rockets, fasteners, and various components for extreme environmental conditions such as aerospace, oil, and power.

Phoenix specialises in testing materials and components at high temperatures and extreme conditions including vacuum, inert gas, and corrosive environments. This means that our range of testing capabilities are ideal for verifying the material characteristics of Inconel 718, providing reassurance that the material is fit for its intended purpose in these types of industries and that the material is compliant with international standards or customer specifications.
