The team at Phoenix has been working collaboratively over the past few years with Ideal Saddle, the largest manufacturer of leather saddles, on wooden saddle trees within the equine industry for dressage, show jumping, eventing and showing styles.
Ideal Saddle wanted to adapt the testing procedure to test the front part of the saddle, known as the pommel, as this was the crucial part of the component that required testing of impact and strength. The saddle tree sample was not the usual type of saddle for an everyday rider, but a customised calvary saddle to support military services. The unique testing was critical to the ongoing development of saddle design being undertaken at Ideal Saddle.
Using our knowledge from compression testing, we developed a bespoke testing procedure to support our customer’s requirements, by adapting the sample fixtures we had used in previous testing applications and adding additional support to the rear of the sample. By adapting these fixtures, we were able to redirect the application of force to that of our customer’s specification, as well as introducing a different method of support to the saddle, for cover safety and equal load of the saddle pommel.
Ideal Saddle came in to witness the testing and we were able to effectively incorporate necessary COVID measures to ensure the safety of our customer and team to perform the testing quickly and safely. They were impressed by our ability to adapt so quickly to the specific requirements and establish a new testing method to accommodate specifications instantly, which gave them even further confidence to use us for consultancy and future testing.
The Phoenix test laboratory offers a comprehensive range of sub-contract materials testing services, on a variety of samples or components made of metals, ceramics, and composites.
If a test specification has not yet been defined, where new products are being brought to the market or a prototype component is still in the early stages of development, we support our customers by providing expert consultancy and advice to define the type of test required for their sample with a complete contract review.
If required, our production team can also assist by designing bespoke fixtures and fittings for the sample, to ensure the test provides accurate data and reliable test results.
